Although recent advances in feature extraction and machine learning have greatly improved image understanding, purely content-based techniques are often unsatisfactory in many real-world problems. Humans exploit many non-visual clues and diverse types of information, including prior knowledge, past experience and contextual information. This additional information is critical to accurately understand the scene and process it accordingly.
