Given the increasing quantities of personal data being gathered by individuals, the concept of a digital library of rich multimedia and sensory content for every individual is becoming a reality and fast becoming a mainstream topic for multimedia research. Thisis referred to as lifelogging and there are significant challenges to be addressed, concerning the gathering, enriching, searching and visualizing of such data. Egocentric vision and lifelogging research is an emergent area of research where the number of publications last 5 years is increasing exponentially. The special issue proposed appears as a continuation of the successfully organized Lifelogging Tools and Applications Workshop (LTA2016) organized together with the ACM Multimedia Conference in Amsterdam, 2016.
This special issue claims to serve as a forum to bring together researchers all over the world to share their recent research advances in this new and challenging area. The disciplines involved include egocentric vision, multimedia analytics, wearable and ubiquitous computing, HCI, information retrieval, applications of lifelogging in cognitive science and healthcare and wellness. We expect original and high quality articles covering: a) novel theoretical and practical applications of egocentric vision and lifelogging data analytics, b) surveys of the recent progress and challenges in this area, and c) new benchmark datasets and libraries.
